Hydraulic cylinder: types and operating

Hydraulic cylinders are important components in earth-moving machines, such as excavators and wheel loaders, as they transform hydraulic force into linear movement, by facilitating the lifting and moving of heavy materials.

The cylinder works thanks to the hydraulic system, consisting of pumps, pipes and hydraulic fluid.

A hydraulic cylinder is a tube closed at one end with a rod that moves inside. Inside the cylinder we find a piston. The piston separates the internal side of the cylinder from the external one. The fluid moves to both sides of the cylinder to extend or retract the rod.

Hydraulic cylinders can push, pull and lift different types of loads with different weights and sizes.

How to preserve the hydraulic system of earth moving machines

The hydraulic system of a machine determines how much weight it can load and at what speed it can operate. Therefore, it represents one of the fundamental elements for the correct functioning of a wheel loader or an excavator.

Operators must obtain the maximum possible performance of the machines to use them in the best way and avoid wastage of fuel.

This objective can only be achieved through the implementation of a failure maintenance and prevention strategy. The checking must be carried out daily and, in the specific case of the hydraulic system, must mainly be focused on the hydraulic oil level. The filters and oil must be changed in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
